Hubby and I share a double whammy on Valentine’s Day. It’s the day we got married. Romantic, we are, till the end. We’ve been together for thirty-eight (38) years now. It’s astounding how time just flies by and you don’t even realize it. But here we are.
Hubby and I rarely do anything extraordinary on either our Anniversary or Valentine’s Day. I do like, however, to get flowers and a box of chocolates. And I’d like a nice meal. Not necessarily out to a restaurant. This year, and lately since my renewal in all things frugal, I wanted to keep our celebration low-cost as well.
A dozen roses, this year, can cost upwards of $35 a dozen. Aldi (of course) had a special: one dozen red roses for only $9.99. Instead of any rose, I opted for a bouquet of daisies, from Aldi, for only $3.99. I think any flower, in the dead of a cold, brutal winter, looks lovely and makes one feel good. The daisies didn’t disappoint:

Happy Valentine’s Day to all my readers out there. Know that I love you and thank you for your continued support! Without you, this blog wouldn’t be possible. Thanks for reading! Love you!
Happy anniversary, Cindi! You and your hubby are married 1 year less than my hubby and me. We will be 39 in May. 🙂 You are right, I don’t know where the time has gone. Chris

Happy Anniversary!
Happy Valentines Day!
I love flowers and chocolate too. My DD gave me a gorgeous bouquet for my birthday and Two bags of Ghiaridelli chocolates for Valentines. I gave candy treats to the grandkids and am watching the grand dog while they enjoy an escape in a house rental in Newport. My brother and Sister-in-law celebrated their 50th anniversary this month. Time does fly.
I love that Aldi’s chocolate. It may be frugal but Australian chocolate so Good. Sincerely, Lara .

Hi Cindi, I love you too. I just share differing views on how I make my retirement years golden not such a financial struggle in the present because of setting financial goals and taking very calculated financial risks. Take the decision on paying cash for my 2019 Subaru Outback or the .09 % loan with total interest paid of $345 over the course of the loan. I had bought 1000 shares of preferred stock at $25.10 and had sold it already three times in its natural high – low price channel and reinvested the $13,000 capital gains and the 11% dividends ( $4 , 000) in the year before I bought the car. I could also had another $8,000 in capital gains at the price it was at if I sold it for the car. All of this is in a Roth IRA so no tax consequence but would lose the tax free growth in the Roth
if I had sold the shares. So shortly after buying the car I sold the stock again and locked in the $8000 profit. I then reinvested when the stock went down increasing the number of shares paying the dividends. Doing a DRIP ( dividend reinvestment plan). I continue to work my employees ( dollars) to maximize my passive income. Automobiles are depreciating assets but with Covid19 the 2019 Subaru Outback is in demand and is worth $6000 more then my loan and the current preferred stock capital gain is $7000. Monday I get my monthly dividends of just this investment of $880 or $10,500 annually from an original investment of $25,100.
Being only two years younger then you we have gone through similar historical times. Stock markets high and lows but I still believe in investing in American businesses. Our family upbringing were different. Sincerely, Lara

Lara, my father was a HUGE investor in the stock market. He learned how to speak English by reading the Wall Street Journal! He used to want to teach me all the time about Wall Street but I would never listen. I like real estate because I can understand it. I have no idea what you are talking about. My brain just doesn’t accept it. When my dad died, he had $8,000,000 in his Vanguard/Fidelity accounts and that was on top of him losing $1,000,000 already in the stock market. He used to go around and actually brag to other people that he LOST one million dollars in the stock market. He had so many more millions it really didn’t matter.
People must live the way they feel most comfortable. I left my money-grubby family when I was 32 and I’ve never looked back. I have ‘enough’ and that’s all that matters to me. I may kick and scream but realistically, I’m doing AOK and I know it. I just don’t like to let my eye off the ball.
PS: My RV increased in value too. Who knew? It’s a big commodity. Ditto for our 2 used cars. There’s a big demand for them. Again, who knew? Things are crazy right now.
Thanks, as always, for your comments.

Happy Valentines and Happy Anniversary on your dual day. I have own only two other houses in my adult life. One our first home- a brand new colonial, and second one a four bedroom Cape rental on Cape Cod. Both we sold with nice gains. I’ve been in my current colonial since 1985 and with Covid19 and low interest rates it’s value increase last year by $70,000. Zillow claims the cost to move would be $38,000, Ouch! The only place I would move is closer to my kids and quite frankly they live very busy lives and in 18 months my youngest grandkid will be in full time kindergarten so I won’t be needed for babysitting as much. I am hoping to do some traveling to my ancestral countries and see the Pacific Northwest. But first I want it to be safe to get work done in my home. A neighbor put her ranch for sale $30 ,000 higher then Zillow said it was worth and she had four offers but she couldn’t get a home in the senior community she wants to move to. So she took it off the market. She then had to replace the 32, year old original furnace($9,000) and the copper pipes $3,000). So she will be putting it back on the market higher when she gets the senior condo she wants. We live in crazy Covid19 times. Sincerely, Lara
