I understand that times are tough right now for a lot of people. I also know that food lines, food pantries are at a breaking point trying to dole out food to the masses. I also know that many of those food pantries are doing their darnedest to portion out good quality, healthy food. It’s up to the recipient to do what is right with that food. It’s up to the recipient to try as they might to make the most healthiest food dishes as they possibly can. This is their life we are talking about, plus the lives of their families and children. Food pantries have been adamant about diving up fresh vegetables and valuable fruits because they know their value to a person’s good health.
There are plenty of websites out there that can correctly instruct food pantry recipients to take what they have been given and prepare healthy, nourishing meals. It doesn’t take a lot of money to make good food. That fact has been proven over and over again. But food preparer, beware! There are also a lot of thieves out there who will trick you into preparing food that’s only claim to fame is it’s cheap! Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Your health and the health of your family and loved ones is your most valuable asset. Don’t let these thieves take your health away.
I am appalled when I see cheap eat cooks instruct people on how to extend boxed mac & cheese (add white flour to milk), or use tomato soup (heavily salted and a can is only .49 cents) to make chili, or use cheap ketchup to make pasta sauce (disgusting!). A can of fresh, healthier, petite tomatoes cost just about the same at .50 cents and will make any dish not only taste better but be better for you!
I consider myself an excellent cook and I pride myself on preparing inexpensive but extremely healthy food. I know what hard times feel like, but as an Italian, we Italians know how to keep the family healthy and strong on very inexpensive foods. The main one being pasta BUT we surely wouldn’t be caught dead pouring ketchup over a steaming hot plate of penne pasta! Italians (as well as so many other ethic cultures) know how to keep themselves and their families strong, well fed and able to meet another disparaging day with vigor. Italians suffered great loss after World War Two. Many, many other ethnic cultures faced wars, massive job losses and economic collapse but they managed to eat well and keep themselves strong so they can continue to work the fields, lay the bricks and move onward into the future!
This past year, the pandemic has taken its toll on each and every one of us. Don’t let the pandemic take a toll on your only remaining, good asset: your health. We need to eat well and stay strong. You can search my blog and will find an ample supply of low cost, nutritious food choices that will keep you and your family healthy, wealthy and wise! Whatever you do, I implore you, please don’t succumb to cheap eats. You may think you’re saving a buck or two but the damage you are doing to your health may be irreparable.
What propelled me to write this particular post is that over the weekend, I made a severe mistake of trying out a cheap eats recipe from a very popular YouTube Channel. I won’t name names but if you’re thinking you can live your life on a dime and some day grow rich because of it, you’re just being taken for a fool.
I was lured in by my sometimes lust for donuts. I’ve been known to weaken a bit or two and buy a bunch of commercially made donuts such as the cinnamon and sugar varieties very popular around autumn or fall. Or the powered white sugar varieties that come 10 to a pack for very little money. Any kind of donut technically isn’t good for you but every once in a while they can go great with a good cup of coffee. Who wouldn’t like that? Occasionally?
So, you can understand when I came across the website that touted freshly made donuts with only three ingredients. Huh? How is that possible? Easy. They took a can of buttermilk bisquits, cut a hole in the center of them, fried them up in oil and shook them in a brown paper bag of either white confectioners sugar or a combo of sugar and cinnamon. The concept sounded weird. But then again, that’s what cheap people do. They think they are creative and somehow skirting the time-consuming issue of preparing donuts from scratch. Unfortunately, they’re not.
I bought a can of refrigerator buttermilk biscuits from Aldi at .79 cents for 10 biscuits. Cut a center hole, fried up the newfangled donuts in vegetable oil, shook them in both sugar concoctions, took a bite and spit the whole friggin’ thing out! They were the most disgusting things I have ever eaten on the planet. First off, no matter what temp I kept the oil at, the “donuts” burned. That’s because buttermilk biscuits are meant to be baked. Not fried. That’s what their original recipe consistency calls for: baked in an oven! Second, neither sugar adhered properly to the “donut”. Lastly, and this is the most important, they tasted like a blob of gooey, undercooked batter that was both repulsive and extremely unhealthy to the ength degree! I left a disparaging comment on said YouTube channel, which the authors promptly removed.
Needless to day, I felt sick for the rest of the day. It took me almost a week to get over the horror of those doughy, gooey blobs that regrettably parsed through my lips and entered my mouth nightmare out of my brain. I couldn’t believe that I had done something to myself so dastardly. How could I have been so stupid? I know better!!!! I wasted a lot of money, time and I suffered a blow to my general, calm, steady good health. It was tough to finally shrug off my bad choice in food judgment. Took a week of good eating to get my body back in balance. YUCK!
Finally, I threw the “donuts” where they belonged: in the garbage! Along with all the other trash. Never again! Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Don’t do it! Don’t fall for cheap eats! If you truly want a good tasting donut, cough up the fifty to seventy-five cents it costs to buy one good donut. Or better yet, make one from scratch on a recipe from a reputable baker.
