My sister, who lives in Florida, and I, who resides in upstate New York, haven’t seen each other since January 2019 due to the pandemic. Now that we’re both fully vaccinated we decided to meet along the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a half-way mark for the two of us.

The Outer Banks (frequently abbreviated OBX) are a 200-mile string of barrier islands and spits off the coast of North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, on the east coast of the United States. The Outer Banks are barrier islands off the coast of the U.S. state of North Carolina, separating the Atlantic Ocean from the mainland. Their open-sea beaches, state parks and shipwreck diving sites make them a popular holiday destination. What makes the Outer Banks so special? No boardwalks, no loud theme parks, and no high rise hotels blocking the views of the ocean. No flashy nightlife, no neon lights, or main street tourist traps. The natural beauty of the fragile islands and the pristine beaches is what makes the Outer Banks so unique. Click here for more info.

When you first come over the bridge onto the Outer Banks, specifically Cape Hatteras you are met with drifts and drifts of windblown sand. You almost think you have landed on another planet. Regardless, the drifts are sheer beauty in themselves.

The last time I was in the Outer Banks was seventeen years ago. Thankfully, not much has changed. It’s still rustic, not too many houses have been built, amenities and shopping plazas are few and very far between. All you have mostly is the sand and the surf. The swimming is extraordinary, especially if you like jumping over high waves. It’s a perfect place to kick off your shoes, take in the rays and reunite with friends and family. It’s a near perfect vacation location. Fishing and crabbing are easy. We caught 14 crabs our very first try. No matter what you prepare for mealtime, everything tastes delicious! Farther up the road horses run free. Each and every night promises you near perfect sunsets. My sister and I spent a glorious week together, making memories and plans for our future.

Enjoy.
