Imagine my surprise, when I turned on the evening news yesterday and was faced with a report on the possibility of a nuclear attack on American soil (click here for article). While many of us are worrying about the price of a gallon of gas or a gallon of milk, our government has been secretly testing out nuclear scenarios.
Over the last few weeks, the government has regularly updated its public guidance on nuclear explosions on its website, ready.gov, making sure links were updated and the necessary information was available. The last major update to this section was in 2020 to include preparedness tips specific to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The page suggests that people get and stay inside and prepare now by having things like battery operated and hand-crank radios because they will function after a nuclear detonation.

To be factual, once the government alerts the public that a nuclear attack is imminent and near, we have around 10 minutes to take refuge, duck and cover. But both you and I know if there really is a nuclear attack, the odds of us surviving is near zero. Even if we reside within 100 miles of a nuclear attack, should the winds shift in our direction, death from radiation poisoning is a sure possibility. The death will not be a pretty one. It will be painful and long drawn out and realistically, there won’t be anyone nearby to save you.
You can visit the government website warning about a nuclear attack and how to prepare for it by clicking here. I’ve already had several conversations with my two daughters about what we would do if an attack was on it’s way. Both my daughters live in New York City which has always been a prime target for just about anything (think 9/11). The most important safety act once notified that an attack is imminent is to get and stay inside for at least 24 hours after detonation. FEMA advises to have a battery operated radio since the nuclear fallout will disable all electronic equipment. To be honest, all of this sounds very comforting but in reality if a nuclear bomb hits, we’re either dead or very near death. This FEMA info is just to make us feel better.

The thought of being bombed in a nuclear attack has been a game changer for me. Once the reality of this happening became clear (and we all know that nothing should surprise us anymore. what we thought was impossible before has proven to us that anything is possible now)I’ve taken on a whole new stance in life.
We’re all doomed so we might as well make the best of whatever days of life we have remaining.
I’m a strong believer in God and a long time ago, during one of my most darkest life experiences, I turned my life over to Jesus Christ and I’ve never looked back. When you come to realize that God is in control and you are relying on Him for your daily bread, nothing any human states in this life truly has any meaning. It’s all rhetoric. What will happen on Planet Earth will happen on planet earth. Who will live and who will die is all pre-planned and pre-ordained. You either get yourself right with God or perish along with everyone else. Once I made this re-commitment to Our Lord, a sense of freedom and calm came over me. I have found that living on this planet has been a pleasant one. I love the great outdoors. I love the oceans and the mountains. I love to hear the birds chirp and sing in the morning. Those things give me pleasure and the drive to fight to continue living. The world is not a horrible place. But humans can be horrible. I’m not going to let them take away whatever joy I have left to live in this world.
A few years ago (two to be exact) I made a comment to a fellow Christian on an observation I noticed about my own life. I don’t have enough money to carry me fully through a long retirement. That’s a fact. When I asked myself why I didn’t think I had enough money, I came to the conclusion that God said I didn’t need any more money than I had because I wasn’t going to live for a very long time. In other words, I had just enough money to live the amount of time said money would afford me. My friend thought my observation was preposterous. But facing today what we all must have to face today, I don’t think I was wrong in my observation and conclusion. I have just enough light for the step I am on.
There is no human being alive today that has any intelligence to get us out of the mess we find ourselves in today. I don’t know of anyone. Do you? Our human leaders are weak, infantile and pathetic. They’re also insane IMHO. Do you feel safe under their guidance? Or have you been awakened to their lies because that’s all it’s been: lies and lies and lies and lies.
I plan on going about my daily life as if nothing has changed. I get up in the morning, have my coffee and now that the weather is getting warmer, I can sit outside on my deck and listen to the birds sing while I sip my caffeine. Despite it all, I’ve mastered food inflation (we have enough), we’ve solved our home heating conundrum by installing a pellet stove in our living room (thus reducing our energy dependence by 90%) and we have a fuel efficient vehicle to get us about (but we’re basically staying home and going nowhere). I’m making plans for continuing our snowbird jaunts next winter. I’m not selling our home. We’re not moving. We’re not changing. In a few days I’ll be kickstarting my summer vegetable garden. DH is renting a chipper so we can clear more land this year than last. In other words, our lives will continue as before. We depend on the good Lord above to provide and protect us. He hasn’t let me down since that fateful February day in 2000 when I turned my life over to Him. I don’t expect He’ll let me down any time soon either.

Thanks for reading my blog!
Hi Cindi, so has worrying about a nuclear bomb-,have you become a survivalist, too? Your post has me realize I am not prepared enough for basement living. I have an unfinished basement but no comforts of home- toilet, bed or comfy chair, no candles, not enough food, iodized salt or water, medical supplies , vitamins, towels , cards, reading materials, toilet paper and Kleenex in the right location. Drinking water Round up my battery operated radios and flashlights don’t forget replacement flashlight bulbs. Clothing. The list goes on and on. Most of it is a matter of repositioning things I have in my home. If I am not in the kill zone do I want to be able to live? Thanks one more overwhelming fear to deal with.

Lara, have you spoken to your children and grandchildren yet? I had to do that yesterday. It was heartbreaking. To look at their faces, look inside their eyes and know they have been cheated out of normal, safe, healthy lives. We had to discuss what steps we would take with a ten minute warning. Thankfully my SIL had it all figured out. They live in the deepest part of the metro system and will take cover in the subways. We coordinated a ham radio type of phone that will survive and keep working after a nuclear attack. They told me they have prepared go bags. If they get a day warning, thankfully they have access to a car and will come up here and then we will head further up north into the mountains. We’ll probably drag the RV with us so we have access to a kitchen, bathroom, shower. Hubby knows of a parcel of land belonging to a good friend of his who will let us stay on the property.
Heartbreaking.
Simply heartbreaking.
But necessary.
Hope other parents will at least talk to their children, family, friends and neighbors.
They’ll probably bomb the top US cities, such as NY, Las Vegas, LA and of course The White House (Washington D.C.) It’ll be automatic once the fistt bomb is detonated. The missiles are programed to go off after the first shot is fired. There will be no turning back.
