Every week I get the flyers from all the local grocery stores in my neighborhood. This week, the deal of the month was whole chickens for only .99 cents per pound at Tops Supermarket. I don’t know about you, but I love a whole roasted chicken right out of the oven! I still had some bags of fresh, whole cranberries in my freezer (left over from Thanksgiving and Christmas) and I made myself a nice relish to go along with my roasted chicken, side of mashed potatoes smothered in my home-made gravy! (Tops also had a good deal on celery and carrots BOGO and their own brand of ricotta).

The sale continues till Friday, January 21, 2022 so if there is a Tops in your neighborhood and you like chicken (they also had legs and thighs for the same price) head on over to Tops and score! Side Note: I had to break my piggy bank to buy the sale items this week. I’m trying to switch off using my credit card when I reach my monthly allotment ($1200) so that I can pay off my credit card in full at the end of the month. I had twenty dollars saved in my piggy bank (from loose change). The Tops supermarket bill came to $17.36. Another successful food-shopping month!

Hi Cindi, I tried to get the 99 cent chicken thighs on sale at ShopRite in my curbside pickup order on 5% Tuesday Senior discount day and they were out as well as the Chockful of Nuts coffee! No substitutions. I am really glad I did another big order because next week’s ad is no longer a Can-can sale. I finished off filling my pantry and perishables totaling $200 retail for $74 off my free gift card. Then I did my CVS CarePass order paying $3.77 for $24.05 retail and free shipping. So ended the month getting over $750 of groceries retail for $7.65 out of pocket. $191 left on my free gift cards.
Another way I am beating inflation is taking advantage of reward offers. Bank of America is offering up to $1,000 for transferring new IRA money. Chase sent me three offers totaling $2550. And I will ask my current broker if they are willing to match any of these. Last year they did and didn’t have to transfer IRA money to reap rewards. 2021 I also did some great credit card rewards offers satisfying the spend to pay taxes and utilities bills and reap a Cape Cod vacation. I have three of these sitting on my desk to evaluate. My daughter beats me hands down with three 2022 family vacations , Greece, California, NH Ski resort paid with accumulated rewards. Cha- Ching! My Dad always said where there is a will there is a way. Sincerely, Lara

Lara, we still have 10+ pounds of those .49 cent legs and chicken thighs left. I think I’m going to cook most of them up when my kids come back to go skiing later on this month. Now that the can-can sale is over have you checked out those prices? Shop Rite is selling those cans of Italian tomatoes for $1.00 a can (up from .70 cents) and you are limited to only 4 cans!!! Instead of 12. Ouch.
I keep getting offers from Chase. Eventually, I’ll crumble. Extra cash looks so good right now.
