Taking a vacay during these tumultuous, inflationary hard times, has got to be almost impossible for many. Determined to still be able to go on a vacation this holiday, my husband took out a ruler and a local map and charted out a new course for us and a new direction. Owning an RV at this time of high gas prices is going to be challenging. Nonetheless, my husband calculated that if we stuck to a 100 mile radius around our home, we might be able to find someplace to get away to and save our vacation plans. Since we live in the valley of the Catskill Mountains, we also live in close proximity to both the Adirondack Mountains in New York State and the Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts. We’ve been to almost every corner of New York, so hubby chose the Berkshires as perhaps a good choice to take a vacay. Hubby didn’t disappoint.
My husband found a privately owned campsite, sitting at the base of one of the highest peaks in MA, that was low cost AND had a heated pool! (The campsite was only 80 miles from our home and based on round trip and gas for towing, our fuel costs came to $129. I also had $25 coming to us in gas award points, so the bottom fuel figure is $104) All the campsites (110) were mostly shaded, had good coverage between sites and boasted of serene privacy, peace and quiet. The sites had water, electricity and grey water services but you had to either disconnect or pay a fee to have your black water taken care of. We were super judicious and were able to take care of the black water ourselves, so no extra money was spent. *For only $225 we were able to secure a site for a whole week!* (prices are $45, $55 and $65, depending on square footage). Since our RV travel trailer is smallish (under 25 feet), we fared very well with the less expensive site.
*Note: many of our friends went on a vacation too BUT they stayed in hotels. The cheapest hotel one of our friends stayed at was $297 a night! The others paid between $300 to $500 a night (Cape May, NJ and Newport, RI to name a few destinations)

Since our RV has a full kitchen (3 burner gas stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator with a generous freezer) one of the many benefits of RVing for us is that we can prepare all of our meals onboard, thus saving ourselves a heap of money! Sometimes we use an electric frying pan to cook some of our foods (like French Toast in the morning). I always use my rice cooker when preparing a dinner. I even have a smallish slow-cooker and we did make a pulled pork one evening for dinner. I bought this fancy, washable, fabric-like tablecloth for our picnic table. (at Aldi for $9) Setting up a fancy table for our meals makes it all the better. There was a lake nearby, so we packed a lunch and took in the view. There was also a Rail Trail (next time we will bring our bikes. Oh yeah! There will be a next time). There were several hiking trails going up the mountain. You can also drive up. We chose to drive up. The road had several photography stops along the way, which I utilized. I’ll show the ride up in tomorrow’s post.
Note: we also discovered there was an Aldi grocery store only 9 miles away. If we ran out of anything or needed any more food, Aldi was there, as always at a low cost to us. We only went out to eat once, for a Greek chicken pita, for a total cost of $25 with tip. The entire weeklong vacation (RV site and fuel) cost us a total of $354. The packed food came out of our monthly budget. The only additional thing we bought while there were two bundles of firewood, for a total of $14.

Wonderful, our vacation was an expensive hell. We are glad to be home. I am planning the next trip.

Vacations are out of this world right now. Sad. It really is a much needed expense. We feel so much better now that we are back home, relaxed and ready to face the next crisis. LOL! (really, not funny but oh! so true). Now, it’s family time. Seeing the grandkids, BBQing and watching the fireworks. All together.

OMG, those views!! So worth it!! Yes, may I just say hotels these days suck? After cruising twice (where they clean your room twice a day and everything is spotless), hotels still claim COVID is why they don’t clean your room. They wait until you leave and the next person comes. And even then, it’s filthy. No hotels for me for a while. PLUS the prices are outrageous. We were going to go to Wilmington, NC for a couple of days to check it out, but I refuse to spend $1100 for 3 nights. I’ll wait until it is off-season and do a VBRO instead. I’d much rather cruise than stay in a hotel anyway. 😉

Sharon, I want you to hold onto your hat when I tell you what my youngest daughter paid for an AirBnB. Last year, she paid $910 a night!!! In Newport RI. She rented a house for 10 days. Add it up!!! They split it with another family BUT it is just insane. Betcha my daughters are kicking themselves when I sold my Hamptons house and my beach house in Newport. I begged them to help me cover the costs, but they just shrugged. Oh well.
We’re not giving up on a cruise as of yet. We are talking about a cruise around the Greek Islands. We’d have to save up so much money BUT it might just be so worth it!
Thanks for your comment.

Wow, that is pretty expensive, even for Rhode Island. I would maybe spend $9000 for a month in Santorini Greece! You definitely have the right idea with the cruise. Cruises aren’t the expensive part, it’s the flight over. We’ve looked into Norwegian Fjords, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, and Japan. All doable, except for the airfare. :(. Our plan is to do two cruises while over there, and only one plane fare. Hopefully sometime soon!

So true. I always leave our hotel room better than I found it. Our hotel room this trip was 187 before discounts and it was a pit. My husband will roll his eyes and I remind him he picks up trash. He says point taken.

I love this! This is how we love to get away. We have a Micro Lite, too. We bring our air fryer and our slow cooker. And we use the outside grill. The change of scenery is so refreshing. The trail looks fabulous! Great find!

Betty we have an outside grill also but hubby didn’t want to use it this trip. I like the idea of the air fryer! We had a great time. Who knew? Thanks for your comment.

Hi Cindi, So glad you got away. Is your energy and cough getting better?
I have two more vacations planned this year. So, so looking forward to them. Seven days using Hilton Honors rewards for Home2 Suites and free hot breakfasts every where. Rooms with microwaves and refrigerators. Indoor pools and exercise room. I haven’t had trouble with cleanliness in the hotels or home rentals I have stayed in since the 1970’s. I hope this luck continues. Using my Chase checking bonus for the gas. I’ll go out to dinner maybe a couple times and do simple salads with chicken, gazpacho, and lettuce wraps. Our Family Cape Cod vacation will be using my Travel rewards card that pays for my suite and I’ll splurge on hot lobster rolls on the beach at sundown and al fresco dinners at two of our favorite restaurants. Probably spend totally $1,000 out of pocket for all three vacations and save the rest of this year budget for 2023. Life is sweet. Sincerely, Lara

Lara, I have a very slight cough in the late evening. A half dose of cough medicine calms my throat. I went for a hike the other day forgetting that I had been ill. By the time I remembered I was ill I realized I walked perfectly fine. No out of breath at all. Ditto for swimming. All good. Thanks for asking.
Enjoy every single second of your vacations. They are precious, for sure!
I heard lobster rolls exceeded $40. Ouch. Whatever it is, just enjoy as best as you can!
