Temps this week are going to be in the mid 90s. What’s a frugal gal to do to keep cool ad NOT break the bank?
First off is the community pool. For only $50 for the entire summer season (Memorial Day to Labor Day) I get to stay cool while swimming and floating about. From noon till 1PM, every single day including weekend, is adult-only swim time! The rest of the day that I’m there, I work on my tan.

When I get home, I have two eco-friendly air conditioners (each 6,000 BTUs) strategically placed on the front side of my home. These two units keep 1140 sq ft as cold as I want it to be. I set the programing to ‘eco’ and forget it. Once the indoor temp reaches its pre-set temperature, the unit shuts off (thus saving me money). It fluctuates on and off while keeping the rooms cool. I set the a/c temp at 71-73F and the unit gets the room down to 75F. Just perfect!

How are you keeping cool this summer?

Thanks for reading my blog!
Hi Cindi. I am trying to not use the oven as much to cook anything during the summer. We keep the AC at 78 and a few degrees cooler at night. We also have ceiling fans.

I hear ya, Chris. I won’t even use the stove top. If it can’t get cooked in the microwave, we’re not eating it. We have ceiling fans in the bedrooms only. Love them! Thanks for sharing!!

Hi Cindi, I am sitting in my first floor 71 degree living room quite comfortable having cooled my house down to 67 from my windows open overnight. Outside high was 89.An 80 foot red maple tree shades my front windows and 200 ft oaks, ash, and hickory trees shade the back of my property. I will do all my activities during the heat of the day in my first floor and not open my windows until the outside temperatures are cooler then the inside which tonight it’s not going to happen till 3 am!. I will probably chill my lower floor with a room air conditioner to 67 degrees in the early morning hours before sunrise. I sleep in my cooler first floor in heat waves. I drink iced water to hydrate instead of room temperature. I enjoy my afternoon coffee iced. I will cook five of my next dinner meals in the early morning outside tomorrow, do bed exercises, walk and tend to my gardens, Then do fun indoor activities and take an afternoon nap. Life is all about adapting to the present and enjoying the journey. Sincerely Lara

Lara, the thing that bothers me the most isn’t the heat. It’s the humidity. I always look at a weather report and see what the humidity level is. When it reaches around 60%, I turn on the air conditioners. The humidity, to me, is the killer. I keep the house interior at 75 degrees during the day and raise them up during the evening. The eco a/c works great at maintaining the interior conditions. usually they rarely go on at night once the interior reaches what I pre-programmed it to be. During the day I love, love, love to sit outside, on my deck with either ice tea or leftover morning coffee, iced. I don’t tend to my garden till after the sun sets. Then I have about an hour or so before it gets dark to do some quick work around the exterior. There’s a rhythm to all of this, for sure! Adapting is the way to go! Thanks for sharing your journey.

Hi Cindi,
That is a great bargain to use the pool! We are keeping cool in the house with the thermostat set to 75. It’s not a great temp to work around the house but if you are just relaxing it is. When I am cleaning I dress in cool weather clothing and turn the ceiling fans on in the room I am in.
I do miss our in ground pools though that we had in our last two homes. But at our age, we no longer want the maintenance.

Hi Precious. We keep our thermostat at 75 too. Working out just fine. I hear you regarding pool maintenance. Very expensive as is the cost of the water! Thanks for your comment.
