sometimes you have to leave your home and homestead to find out the truth about what really is going on in this country. When hubs and I were in Rhode Island a few weeks ago, we decided to look up some of our old friends. We haven’t seen them in three years since the pandemic started. One of our dearest friends that we have always kept in contact with was our real estate agent. She brokered the beach house we purchased back in 2005. We sold the house in 2015.

We first contacted her to ask about her recommendation on finding a low cost restaurant. Did she know of any? “Forget it” she said. “The prices are insane. You can’t dine out anymore in Newport.” She explained that the cost of food was now even unattainable for her. She hadn’t eaten a real meal in weeks. In fact, she told us she mainly bought her groceries either at Aldi or Walmart but was now only eating ice cream because that was all she could afford.

Yes. You are understanding me correctly. My friend was going without nutritious food because the high cost of groceries was out of her reach. My friend never married and her mother had just recently died. There was no way either my husband or I could have afforded to taking her out to dinner ourselves. Money is tight for us also. But we did invite her over for dinner and we did buy her a gift certificate to Aldi. We were supposed to go out to a paying event that evening but cancelled and chose to use that earmarked money for our friend. Hubby made a dinner of roasted chicken, fresh green garden salad and I made a big bowl of Italian potato salad. For dessert we had fresh strawberries and whipped cream. I gave my girlfriend all the leftovers. There wasn’t a dry eye in the place. We did the best we could for her. I told her if she ever needed a place to stay, we always had an extra bedroom for her. It was the best we could offer.

If you’re one of those people who think all is right in America I’m sorry to tell you that it is not. Things are bad all over and it is only going to get worse. If you haven’t prepared, it still is not too late. You need to get your financial house in order. Get rid of as much debt as possible. You need to stock up on canned food items, rice, beans, evaporated milk, peanut butter and/or whatever else you might need. You also need to stock up on medical supplies, beauty supplies, prescriptions, whatever. If you can, please start putting some ready cash aside. You also need to set up a buddy system. We all need each other. Now. More than ever.

Please be kind to one another. I can’t stress that enough.
